Colin Gunton was the Associate Minister at Brentwood United
Reformed Church for many years until his death in 2003.
Colin was a friend, mentor, guide and leader to Brentwood
United Reformed Church. His contribution to Church life was
great. He was one of the foundation stones of the church.
His influence on our church is constant; a reminder to all the
leaders and members of the importance of the Word and the
Sacrament as key to our worship.
Colin was also a world class theologian; his influence to
British theology was unmatched since Newman (although I am not
sure he would like the comparison). As webmaster and Author
of this web site his gentle guidance drove the design. As he
said, a church web site must first be about God.
This site is very delicate to his memory.
There are theologians and then there are theologians like Colin
Gunton. His work on the doctrine of the Trinity and doctrine of
Creation have helped people understand and grasp their meaning and
importance. Colin was one of a group of theologians who helped
reestablish theology on a Trinitarian basis and do theology from
Trinitarian perspective. In short, he took the doctrine of the
